William Allingham – Donegal poet

Born #OTD in 1824 William Allingham from Ballyshannon was a poet and writer. His best known poem ‘The Faeries’ was very well-known at the time and was said to have been an influence on WB Yeats.

His diaries record many encounters with important writers of the day including Alfred Tennyson and Thomas Carlyle.
