A talented bunch of musicians from Newcestown Comhaltas have been selected to perform during this year’s Late Late Toy Show on Friday December 1st. The group is made up of ten children who competed in Fleadh competitions this year as the Newcestown Under 12 Ceili Band. They were very successful in the competitions, winning the top prize at the Munster Fleadh in July and qualifying for the All-Ireland, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Ennis last August.
Last month hundreds of children from all over the country auditioned at four different venues over four days for a few coveted performing slots in the Late Late Toy Show. The Newcestown group played their hearts out at their audition in Cork City on October 23rd. The producers told them on the day that they were the happiest céilí band they had ever seen!
Two weeks later they got the call they had been hoping for. Now they will be playing a central part in a traditional music and dance performance during the Toy Show. This month they are travelling to Dublin for rehearsals at weekends.
Their teacher Liam O’Mahony from Newcestown said it was a very exciting time for the band. “They are super musicians and that’s why they have done so well, but this group is a little bit special – they are all really lovely kids. We are delighted that they are getting this great opportunity to shine on a national stage,” he said.
The band is made up of Fiachra Ó Donnchadha, Hannah Mai Canty, Hugh Flanagan, Orlaith Deasy and Sean Deasy, all from Newcestown, Aoibheann O’Driscoll from Coppeen, Tadhg O’Riordan from Bandon, Maighréad Kiely from Béal na Bláth, Maggie Buckley from Bealnamorrive, Coachford, and Megan Gillespie who lived in Bandon until recently.
Look out for them on the Toy Show after the main evening news on Friday December 1st – there will be a splash of West Cork magic in Donnybrook that night!
