DEPUTY Michael Collins has welcomed the announcement by Agriculture Minister Michael Creed of the Slurry Spreading Flexibility Scheme.
‘This is a positive step by the Nitrates Section of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and I would advise farmers to avail of this scheme immediately,’ Deputy Collins said. The scheme will allow farmers to spread slurry after the closing date of October 15th only if they apply for the scheme before Saturday October 14th.’
Deputy Collins said that contractors should advise their farmer customers of the scheme and the farmers should immediately contact the Nitrates Section of the DAFM at 053-9163444 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org with details of the flooding/traffic-ability situation, their herd number and other relevant data.
‘This is very welcome news for hard pushed farmers,’ Deputy Collins continued. This will ease the pressure however, I would urgent farmers to ensure that they work safely around slurry and to follow the guidelines set down by the Dept, spread only if and when conditions are ideal and to remember contact the DAFM immediately to avail of the Slurry Spreading Flexibility Scheme.’
