Cork South West TD, and Spokesperson on Disability, Margaret Murphy O’Mahony, has called on the management at Cork Airport to consider introducing an autism friendly sensory room for children and adults with autism.
Deputy Murphy O’Mahony made the call after Shannon Airport introduced such a facility in the past week.
“This development at the airport has been met positively by autism support groups, families and educational professionals.
“Anecdotally, I’ve heard of families considering going on their first holiday in a long time as a result of this new facility.
“I think Cork Airport should ensure that it provides the same services to ensure that potential business is not lost to Shannon Airport.
“Thankfully, this is part of a growing realisation in Irish society that we need to find ways of accommodating people, and children in particular, with autism. It’s great to also see shops, cinemas and even football stadiums offering places where those with autism can still take part in everyday activities,” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.
