TDs shouldn’t claim credit for Ballincollig’s inclusion in Rent Certainty Zone

Aindreas Moynihan

LOCAL TD, Aindrias Moynihan has welcomed the announcement that Ballincollig is to be included in the new Rent Certainty Zones, and private renters will face a maximum 4% rent increase per year over the next three years.

“This is a positive move, and, while Fianna Fáil preferred a lower annual increase, demonstrates the capacity of Fianna Fáil TDs to deliver real results for constituents.

“When these Rent Certainty Zones were first announced by Fine Gael, places on the edge of the city such as Ballincollig and Douglas, were not included.

“I lobbied hard for Fianna Fáil to insist on expanding the number of towns to be included, and in particular, for Ballincollig to be included.

“Rents have been increased by at least 20% over the past number of years. The 4% cap will give certainty to renters, and ensure that they are not priced out of the market.

“The point needs to be made that without Fianna Fáil, Ballincollig would not have been included. Fine Gael had no intention of expanding the scheme until Fianna Fáil insisted upon it.

“So Fine Gael TDs claiming credit for Ballincollig’s inclusion should look at the events of the last Dáil sitting week, and reflect on who did what, and said what,” concluded Moynihan.
