Since December 2016 it has been hectic for Beara Community Games locally and nationally. The range of events on offer locally was expanded. Beara children blazed a path to success, surpassed expectations at local, county and national level and deserve massive congratulations.
There were individual and team events comprising of Quiz, Swimming, Football, Handwriting, Art, Solo Talent, Athletics, Cross Country and Futsal.
At regional/county level, participants who were awarded first place qualified for the National Finals in Dublin. This year the National finals took place over 2 weekends in May and August. In many cases there were Beara children who could not commit their attendance at events in which they had qualified at county and national level. In these cases the place was offered to the next awarded and available local level participant.
At County/Regional level the Beara medal count for individual events (in Swimming, Handwriting, Art, Solo Talent , Cross Country and Athletics) was: Gold – 11; Silver – 11; Bronze -7.
The medal count for team events was: Gold – 1(Quiz); Silver 2(Girls Football and Quiz)
The August National Community Games Beara finalists were:
Amy Downey u8 Art
Jack Sheehan u10 Art
Olly Fasanya u10 Athletics

Sebastian Kjelsen u16 Solo Music

As ever there was a fantastic amount of entries for the Beara Community Games Art and Handwriting competition. Special thanks goes to all the teachers who encourage participation and to our judges. This year saw a change of location to Riverstick for the county finals on June. 8 out of 9 Beara artists won medals. 2 of the 3 gold medal winners were able to travel to Dublin in August. Amy Downey and Jack Sheehan wore their Cork jerseys proudly and enjoyed the atmosphere of such a large event. 5 medals were awarded to Beara in the Handwriting.
The Beara Solo Talent event showcased beautiful vocal and musical abilities. It is worth ‘noting’ (pardon the pun!) that the total number of entries at local level was greater than 2016. Nationally, Beara had representation in both available age categories for Solo Singing and Solo Music.
February also saw the Cross Country taking place in the Regional Park, Ballincollig, followed in the afternoon by the Table Quiz. This year for the first time, Beara entered 2 quiz teams. It was a great competition. There were 9 teams and Beara were delighted to take the top 2 positions. Five members of these teams, Jack Hanley, Mikey Orpen, Pearse Downey, Marty Orpen and Lisa Gilsenan joined together to represent Cork at the National finals in May. They did extremely well to finish half way up the table of 25 teams. Thanks should also go to Molly Swift who made herself available as a sub for both occasions.
Our year in Community Games started as usual with the Swimming. The Beara trials took place at The Water School in January. It was fantastic to see new children taking part in this event for the first time. A team of 11 children went on to represent Beara at the County Finals in Bishopstown in February. Three medals were won, two of which were golds by the O’Sullivan brothers Cillian and Eoghan. They both went on to the National finals in May where Eoghan swam a great heat in the U14 50m freestyle and narrowly missed out on a place in the final whilst Cillian swam one of his fastest times in his U10 25m freestyle race.
To conclude, naturally, we thank the parents who give/gave up their time and effort to prepare their child and to travel to these events. We also thank the local schools and the Water School who voluntarily assisted in distributing and collecting entries and hosting events. And of course we thank our judges.
We need more people to get involved and help at ideation stage (how best to run a local event) and on the ground during events. The future of Beara Community Games is completley dependant on us- the parents or grandparents! Currently we do not have enough volunteers. YES- this is all vountary. There is no accounting for numerous texts, phone calls, posters or facebook posts!
If you are interested in helping please like/message our facebook page (Beara Community Games) and/or contact Breda Norris (087 2360635), Maree Angles (086 0791830), Shirley Cahill (087 1234954) or Mary Power (086 1936181). If the current volunteers ‘stand down’ then there will not be any further community games events without YOUR help.
