West Cork Sinn Féin county councillor Paul Hayes, is participating in this Friday nights Focus Ireland “Shine A Light on Homelessness” campaign, when he will sleep out at Asna Square from 7pm to 7am.
The event is organised around the country to draw attention to the growing homelessness crisis and to raise much needed funds for the Focus Ireland charity.
The Clonakilty sleep-out will be one of hundreds of similar events happening around the country, on the same night. Cllr Hayes is encouraging anyone interested to join him for any part of the night as a gesture of solidarity with those misfortunate to find themselves homeless.
Cllr. Hayes said, “When many of us think of homelessness, we think of people sleeping rough on our streets in Dublin or Cork City. This is only part of a much greater issue. There are families, single people, young people, women and children with nowhere to call home in Ireland today.
“Sadly, rural areas like West Cork is no different, and in my work with Cork County Council, I see the huge pressures people are under, trying to keep a roof over their head. Focus Ireland is working with people in vulnerable situations to move them out of homelessness and into a home of their own.
“That’s why I’m sleeping-out on October 13th and I’m asking the public to help me raise vital funds to continue this great work.”
