Along with the American writer HP Lovecraft, Sheridan Le Fanu is often regarded as one of the originators of the modern horror fiction genre.

Born in Dublin in 1824 he was a prolific short story and novel writer; as well as being highly influential in horror and ghost stories he was also a pioneer of the crime thriller. He came from French Huguenot stock on his father’s side and via his mother he was related to the famous playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan who was his great uncle.
