Age Friendly Bandon has taken a huge step introducing a pilot Shuttle Service for Bandon which commenced Monday 14th August 2017. “We are introducing the pilot Shuttle Service so we can prove the absolute need for this service within our town”.
Having conducted several studies and interviews with older persons in the community some of the most serious concerns were accessibility, inclusion, isolation, loneliness and quality of life. Age Friendly Bandon was set up in June to look at issues which a affect older persons, (AFB) Age Friendly Bandon felt that the Shuttle Bus addressed a lot of issues.
Age Friendly Bandon Committee highlighted several issue including disabled parking, parking in general, footpath conditions and public toilet issues to local County Council officials at a recent meeting and are working on short medium and long term plans for improvement.
Mary O’Brien chairperson of the group stated “the lack of a footbridge has posed serious problems for people on Bandon’s North side with longer to walk, poor footpath surfaces and a lot of obstacles like bins and poor car parking practices on North Main Street. Our survey did indicate that people from other parts of the Town also felt that one of the things that would improve their quality of life would be access to a shuttle bus service” Mary went on to say that “our committee will be working with all groups to advocate Age Friendliness in Bandon and on this project we felt the best way to show need was to actually roll out the project”.
The service will be available Tuesday, Thursday and Friday weekly for 4 weeks it will service The North side of the town and East and West of the South side of town. Timetables are available at The Post Office at St. Michael’s Centre and at all the Pharmacies in Bandon. The cost of the return shuttle will be subsidised down to €3 and €2 one way.
PRO for the group Carol Crean implores people of Bandon to get behind the scheme and use the service as it will work to show the need for a permanent service in Bandon. “We are optimistic that our pilot project will be used by all, but most especially older citizens and allow people to come out safely and conduct their affairs”.
