Cork North Central TD, Billy Kelleher has said that the latest flooding of the Jack Lynch Tunnel shows just how necessary a northern ring road on the Northside of the city is.
“The latest flooding of the tunnel demonstrated the need for such a route. The city is highly dependent on the tunnel, and if, for whatever reason, it becomes unpassable or unusable, the city can grind to a halt.
“I have been calling for a northern ring road for some time. Unless progress is made soon, it may take years for it to be started, let alone completed.
“It would take pressure off the Jack Lynch Tunnel and take a lot of unnecessary traffic out of the city centre.
“If you are travelling from Dublin and want to visit Ballincollig or further west, you must go through the tunnel and then through the city centre.
“This is, I believe, unnecessary, and must be addressed with a northern ring road.
“The land is available for development right now and the City and County Councils must start making the case to Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Transport for this project to be started and expedited.
“I have consistently raised with issue with the TII, the City and County Councils and the Minister for Transport asking for an update on this much needed piece of infrastructure,” concluded Kelleher.
