Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 commenced last Monday 27th February and continues until 12th March. The Clonakilty Fairtrade Committee has made a call to everyone to make an extra special effort to purchase FT items when shopping, eating out and in the workplace during this time.

Mayor of Clonakilty Anthony McDermott launched this years Clonakilty FT Fortnight programme of events at a pleasant ceremony at the Emmet Hotel on Monday evening 27th. As usual the committee will be busy and will be giving talks to pupils in 6-7 local primary schools as well as the Sacred Heart Secondary School.

Their main event is this Friday evening 3rd March when there will be a public “Chocolate Tasting and Talk” at the Emmet Hotel from 7-9pm with Allison Roberts of Clonakilty Fairtrade Chocolate, who is also treasurer of the FT committee. She will demonstrate how she makes her product from the cocoa bean to the consumable chocolate.

The committee is delighted that special guests on the night will be a Cocoa Grower from a Fairtrade Cocoa Co-Op in Nicaragua, and an official from Fairtrade Ireland’s national office. The event is open to all – including children (under the supervision of parents!), and costs €5, which includes a complimentary bar of chocolate at the end! Booking advisable to reserve places by ringing 085-7574338.
