Locals shocked by extent of Gougane Barra gorse fire

FIRE crews from Bantry, Macroom, Dunmanway and Skibbereen attended a mountain gorse fire in the Gougane Barra lake area over the weekend.

They were supported by a control unit from Ballincollig and a water tanker from Bantry. The crews were there from approximatley 12.45am until late Monday morning when the fire was brought under control. Fire Crews also attended a number of other similar fires in the West Cork area over the weekend.

Following the overnight gorse fires Patricia Messinger on C103 spoke with Neil Lucey of the Gougane Barra Hotel who witnessed everything first hand.

Residents in the area were worried as fires raged across the night. Locals could hear sheep scream as animals try and escape the fires on the mountains overhead.
