THE annual Kinsale RNLI Raft Race takes place on Bank Holiday Saturday (5 August), starting at 3pm from the Bulman Bar and ending with a Party on the Pier. The Kinsale fishermen will kindly supply ‘A Taste of the Sea’ in return for donations to the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea.
Up to 20 rafts will compete for the coveted trophy designed by Dominic Dolan of Kinsale Silver, with reigning champions, Kinsale Outdoor Education Centre, promising a vigorous defence of their title.
DJ Anthony of The White Lady Hotel presides over the party on the pier with his inimitable blend of music, race commentary, fancy dress, and fun and games for all the family. This year for the first time, extreme artist Philip Gray gives an art demonstration on the pier, including the unique opportunity for members of the public to make their own mark on the canvas that Philip will incorporate into his finished artwork. This will be auctioned at a later date in aid of the RNLI.
Many local businesses have sponsored prizes for fastest raft, best fancy dress and the team raising the greatest amount of sponsorship for the RNLI, not forgetting the Oar of Shame for the most dismal performance! Race sponsors include Actons Hotel, Black’s Brewery, Blue Haven, Canvas Works, CH Marine, Finn’s Table, Giles Norman, Granny’s Bottom Drawer, ITW Sports Branding, Kinari Boutique, Kinsale Coffee, Kinsale Bay Food Company, Kinsale Good Food Circle, La Bougie, Mamukko, Nine Market Street, 1601 Off Licence, Stonewell Cider, and the Trident Hotel.
The Kinsale RNLI lifeboat station will be open to the public on Sunday 6 August from 1.30pm when visitors can meet the crew, see the lifeboat in action and learn more about the work of the RNLI. All welcome.
