“Great success at Community Games County Finals”
The members of Kilmeen & Kilbree GAA and Kilbree Camogie Club had the most successful day at the Community Games County Finals. The finals were held in the Mardyke, on Saturday last.
In the long puck, Caoimhe Murphy and Heather Brimble were placed first and third respectively. Caoimhe now progresses to the long puck All-Ireland in Dublin in August. Congratulations to Mary Murphy who won the sprint race, Maeve O’Neill won the 800m and Niamh McCarthy won the hurdles. Congratulations to the relay team that qualified and to all the club members who competed across all competitions. All the winners progress to the All-Ireland finals.
Junior A Hurling
In horrendous wet conditions, the junior hurlers defeated Ballinascarthy on Friday night, in Rossmore. The final score was Kilbree 1-9 Ballinascarthy 0-9.
U14 (A) Camogie Championship
Kilbree’s U14 girls played the preliminary round of the Carbery U14(A) championship, away to Newcestown, on Wednesday night. Newcestown have had a great run in the U14 Feile competition and were probably favourites in this tie. The Kilbree girls were five points down at half-time and were facing an uphill battle. However goals by Sinead O’Sullivan and Caoimhe Murphy ensured that Kilbree would get the upper hand. This was a hard fought battle from end to end. Kilbree had to dig very deep to keep Newcestown at bay, especially in the last quarter. The final score was Kilbree 4-01 Newcestown 1-08.
Team: Heather Brimble, Margaret Collins, Kate O’Donovan, Jessica O’Driscoll, Rebecca Hurley, Emily O’Donovan, Maeve O’Neill, Mary Murphy, Rachel Deasy (0-1), Caoimhe Murphy (1-0), Aife O’Neill, Niamh McCarthy, Alison Collins and Sinead O’Sullivan (3-0).
The U14 footballers defeated Glengarriff in Rossmore on Thursday night. This was a strong and spirited performance from the U14’s against a talented Glengarriff side. The final score was Kilmeen 7-7 Glengarriff 3-11.
Team: Micheal Keohane, Ryan Jennings, Brian Buttimer, Brian Carmody, Gene O’Donovan, Darragh Clancy, Daniel McCarthy, Cillian Twohig, Ethan Buttimer, Joe Bailey, Eoin O’Sullivan, Sam Bailey, Peter O’Sullivan, Darren McCarthy and Conor O’Sullivan.
The U10 hurlers played a most exciting game against Sliabh Rua on Saturday morning. The Kilbree side was depleted as many of the U10 boys were involved in Community Games. The remaining U10’s and the U9’s put in a great performance. The younger boys were given a chance to shine and they defeated the Riverstick side. Well done to everyone involved.
The lotto jackpot of €3,500 was won by Denis McSweeney from Lisnabrinna. The numbers drawn were 2, 6 and 16. Next week’s jackpot will be €1,000.
