A DISASTROUS change of course was made just six minutes before a trawler steamed directly into a rocky island with five fishermen dying in raging seas as the vessel sank.
A marine expert told a Cork coroner’s inquest he believed one of the crew either turned off the auto-pilot on the ‘Tit Bonhomme’ or else manually adjusted the course settings before it ploughed into a West Cork island. more »

KEVIN Kershaw made two desperate 999 calls from his mobile phone in the minutes after the ‘Tit Bonhomme’ trawler struck rocks at the entrance to Glandore Bay in west Cork.
The calls were made at 5.46am and 5.49am on January 15 2012 as the 21-year old was told by his desperate crew mates that he didn’t need call credit to make a 999 alert.
THE West Cork Vintage Club annual run takes place this Sunday (May 19th) starting at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery and heading to Baltimore via the scenic route through Glandore and Union Hall.

West Cork couple found guilty of handling stolen property

A LITHUANIAN national living in West Cork has been jailed for a year and banned from Ireland for five years on his release arising out of an investigation into a spate of burglaries throughout Cork and Kerry where over €90,000 worth of property was stolen.
A great job for eight weeks in the summer (if lucky) but a hard job for the rest of the year.
FINE Gael Cork South West Deputy, Jim Daly is calling on the Government to work with the insurance industry to establish a “solidarity insurance flood fund” which could meet the needs of home owners who cannot obtain insurance on their property as a result of having claimed for flood damage in the past.
Deputy Daly will be meeting with the CEO of the Irish Insurance Federation, Kevin Thompson, next week to discuss this proposal and to seek support from the Federation.
