Cape Clear's North Harbour

THE Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has approved a heavy cargo service to serve four of West Cork’s inhabited islands.

Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs Dinny McGinley’s sanctioned the grant for Comharchumann Chléire Teo to provide a heavy cargo service to Cape Clear, Sherkin Island, Hare Island and Long Island.

The service will run for 50 days over a period of one year from January 1st 2012 at a cost of €950 per sailing.

Making the announcement, Minister McGinley said that the arrangement would ensure that the islands in West Cork will have a reliable cargo service and that the island communities’ living costs will be reduced as a result.

The news was welcomed by West Cork TD Noel Harrington who said the service would decrease the cost of transporting goods to the islands.
