NEW figures show the number of people on the housing waiting list stands at over 110,000 nationally an increase of 13% since 2011.
Property experts have indicated this figure will increase due to the change in legislation which will allow banks to get tougher on households in mortgage distress.
Reacting to the figures Cllr Rachel McCarthy Sinn Fein Representative for Bandon Carrigaline has called for a change in government policy in relation to the supply of social housing.

LOCAL Labour TD Michael McCarthy has welcomed a commitment by Irish Water to reserve a significant portion of jobs on its nationwide metering programme for persons who are unemployed.
“Irish Water today announced the creation of 1,600 jobs. Recruitment begins immediately with jobs available across the country.
LOCAL TD Michael McCarthy has welcomed news that Cork County Council will receive an additional allocation of €165,994 for the Housing Adaption Grants Scheme for people with disabilities and older people.
This will bring the total contribution for this year from the Exchequer to €3,814,922.
REVELATIONS that all the funds raised through the introduction of the property tax will not be used to provide local services has angered Sinn Fein Cllr Rachel McCarthy.

FINE Gael Cork South West TD, Jim Daly, has said that local authorities must be compelled to call in the bonds pledged by developers and to use the cash held by them as security to ensure that new and unfinished housing estates are completed to an acceptable standard.
Deputy Daly made the call as the Cork County Manager took the decision to bring before the council a proposal to take charge of more than 300 estates, even if they are not completed, which will bestow responsibility on the Council to complete unfinished works.
