VITAL upgrade works to Clonakilty’s sewage treatment plant have been thrown into doubt as Cork County Council have yet to commit to provide funding for the work it has emerged.

The €5 million scheme to upgrade the plant was due to go ahead this year and it was hoped the worked would put an end to bad smells in the town due to the inadequate system.

Following questioning from several local councillors however, County Engineer Noel O’Keeffe was unable to confirm the €500,000 contribution from the county council for the scheme would be made available.

He told the councillors that due to limited resources all such projects had to be assessed by a full management team in County Hall before being approved.

The Department of Environment has already committed to provide €3m for the work and Clonakilty Town Council has committed to provide €1.5m.
