BADLY needed upgrade works for the Clonakilty N71 bypass have been approved to go to the design stage by the National Roads Authority (NRA).

Cork County Council will now proceed with the design work for road pavement improvements which should leave the scheme well placed to proceed to construction once funding permits.

Michael McCarthy

Local Labour TD Michael McCarthy said that the decision was good news for motorists, “This follows ongoing efforts by myself and colleagues to alert the relevant authorities to the declining state of the road and to the need to upgrade it as soon as possible.

“In particular, local motorists are worried about the possible further deterioration of the road heading into the winter period.

“Thankfully our concerns have been heeded and the NRA have this week given the green light to the design stage of the improvement programme.

“I look forward to the design phase getting underway and will continue to push for progress on the issue.”
