Castletownbere RC secured five bronze medals in the ultimate competition of the year the  All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships which were held in Courtmacsherry.

In a brilliant and gruelling competition where the senior ladies dominated for the first 750M in the Open Classic race  and came out of the  half way turn in the lead the ladies  maintained a strong effort for the next 750M but were edged out of the Gold.

A wonderful effort made by the ladies secured five bronze All-Ireland medals for the Club.

The crew who had prepared hard mentally and physically during their training  and  winning  their well deserved  All-Ireland titles were Emma Hanley, Noreen Hanley, Cliona O’Regan, Orla Gilsenan and coxswain Michael Hegarty.

On to the Open Classic men’s race where after demonstrating their seamless rowing ability and sheer brute strength in a fantastic race with a pace that couldn’t be caught at any point by the other crews, senior men raced in to first place with a magnificent win.

The brief and jubilant cry of celebration was cut short by the announcement that the crew had been disqualified!

The call was made by the steward boat at the 750M turn.

The club objected however, to the bitter disappointment, the decision was upheld by federation officials.

Senior Men Crew 2012 were Michael John Hanley, Paddy O’Shea, David O’Sullivan, Valerij Michnivk  and cox Dan O’Sullivan.

On a bright note it was wonderful to have our underage members compete at All-Ireland level competition for the very first time!

Using a boat that the club currently has on loan from the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation, underage crews participated in the One Design Yawl category.

Pitting themselves against the best in the country were; Aed O’Shea, Brian Power, Sean Douglas, Stephen Hanley, Paddy Hanley, Paddy Sheehan, Dylan Murphy,  Conor Power, Caitríona Harrington, Ciara O’Sullivan, Muireann Murphy, Danielle Murphy, Kellie O’Neill, Catherine Daly, Eimer McCarthy, Jacqueline Murphy, Debbie Power, Roisin Harrington and Tara Whelan.

Well done to all the young members who have only been training for a very short while.

The club would like to thank the hosts of the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships, Courtmacsherry who did a splendid job down to the minute details in organising the event.

A great time was had by our club at the event and some of us were particularly lucky to enjoy the abundant hospitality and kindness of our host Norma Walsh in the Ard na Greine B&B Ballinascarthy.
