Clare O'Leary training for the expedition in Canada.

BANDON adventurer Dr Clare O’Leary is about to set off on her latest challenge, this time a trek of more than 700km to reach the North Pole on foot from Northern Canada.

Dr O’Leary who works at South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel is no stranger to adventure having already reached the South Pole and the seven summits, the highest mountain peaks on each of the seven continents.

This will be her third attempt to reach the North Pole and if she is successful she will become only the second woman ever to reach both poles and the seven summits.

Dr O’Leary will be accompanied on her trek by mountaineer Mike O’Shea.

The pair hope to set off within the next week or so and you can follow their progress at www.irishnorthpole2012.com which will also feature regular updates from “Tom Bear” for younger followers.
