A GROUP of transition year students from Colaiste na Toibhirte, Bandon have been named as the winners of the Trend Micro “What’s Your Story” competition for their video “Hiding Online” which highlights the dangers of cyber-bullying.

Although just two-minutes long, the students’ video really grabbed the judges’ attention as it captured the essence of cyber bullying, as well as demonstrating how best to deal with this issue.

The students were presented with a cheque for €3,000 for scooping the first prize in the national competition.

Avril Ronan, Senior Operations Manager with Trend Micro said, “We received entries from individuals and schools for the What’s Your Story competition, which is really about heightening the awareness of playing safe online, and enabling young people to talk to each other about this serious issue.

“This was the first year of the competition in Ireland, and the standard of entries from all over Ireland was exceptionally high ranging from fantastic songs, poems, drawings, videos, all focused on promoting online safety”, she said.

According to Trend Micro, research shows that a third of children aged 11-15 years admit to taking more risks online than in real life.
