A GROUP of 22 venture and rover scouts from Bandon Scout Group and their leaders will be travelling to Botswana, Africa in July of this year on a three-week volunteering trip.
The group began their Bandon 2 Botswana (B2B) project in July of 2011 and the project has been a huge success already raising €16,000 of their €20,000 fundraising target set last July.
A Fundraising thermometer sign sponsored by Uptime Printing on the Bandon Bypass displays how close to the target amount the scouts are.
Fundraising event to date have included a table quiz, fashion show, coffee mornings, book fair, ladies night, a sponsored cycle and cake sales.
The sponsored cycle covered the equivalent distance from Bandon to Botswana using exercise bikes provided by the Riverview Gym in Bandon throughout last October. Schools around Bandon have including Scoil Phádraig Naofa, Scoil Bride (Crossmahon), Colaiste na Toirbhirte, St Brogan’s College, Hamilton High School and Bandon Grammar School have all contributed to the effort.
Bandon Soccer Club and Bandon Gun Club have also made generous donations to the project, as have the people of Bandon and beyond.
The members of the project recently had a very informative first aid presentation given by Jonathan Tyner of the Red Cross and talks and presentations like these are making sure all that of the venture and rover scouts will be 100 per cent ready for their trip to Africa.
The next big event is a collection for a 40ft container, sponsored by freight company UTC Overseas and on Saturday May 26th between 9am and 1pm at the St Patrick’s Church car park.
The scouts will be collecting as much as they can for the children and young adults of Botswana with the aim of filling the container with clothes, books, toys, games and sports gear.
Second hand goods will of course accepted but please keep in mind that the items need to be in a decent condition and suited to travelling the long journey to Africa.
The scouts will be leaving for Botswana on July 15th next.
When in Botswana they will be helping renovate pre-school buildings for orphans and also organising activities for the young kids as well as a range of other projects around the capital, Gaborone.
Smaller Fundraisers have been lined up in the coming weeks before the Scout Group sets off on their volunteering trip.
The final fundraiser is a barbeque evening in Nyhan’s Bar on Saturday, July 7th.
