WIDESPREAD feelings of shock, disbelief and disappointment were felt by the people of Kilmeen and Castleventry Parish when they discovered one morning recently that thieves had stolen several baskets of flowers which were on public display in their community. Kilmeen Kubs action continues in Kilmeen & Kilbree GAA Hall The junior classes (junior infants – second class) continue with hurling and football training on Friday mornings, in Kilmeen GAA hall. After a wonderful weekend of scintillating drama and comedy, the West Cork One Act Drama Festival drew to a close with the announcement of the results and awards. Adjudicator Imelda McDonagh was warm and full of praise for the festival and the eleven productions presented.
The annual West Cork One Act Drama Festival takes place in the theatre Rossmore from Friday 14th-Sunday 16th November offering a warm and cheery alternative to dreary November nights in. A rich miscellany of drama will take to the stage including several comedies and classic drama.
THE Gaiety School of Acting Shakespeare schools programme is taking place in St Marys Theatre, Rossmore on 24th and 25th November next. The programme is aimed at Junior Cert, Leaving Cert and Transition Year students. Tickets are €12 per student and all teachers go free.
The U8-U14 players in Kilmeen & Kilbree GAA Club recently had an expert coaching session with James McCarthy (GDO) in Rossmore. The children thoroughly enjoyed the training they received and learned much from it. The second place team at the recent All- Ireland final of Macra’s Drama Competition held in Rossmore, Ballinascarthy Macra, Tom Byrne, adjudicator, Evelyn Harrington,Sean Ronan, Macra National President, Kieran O’Dowd,Marguerite Buckley, Brian McCarthy, Margaret Keohane and Louise Collins.
KILMEEN GAA club’s inaugural Easter Camp took place last week from Tuesday 22nd to April 24th. This camp was organised by Deirdre O’Leary, Marie Dorgan and Claire Collins. The timing of the camp coincides perfectly with the completion of the “Kilmeen Kubs” and whole school coaching programme.
Pictured at the launch of the 53rd West Cork Drama Festival in Rossmore were the festival committee. The Drama Festival runs from March 7-17th in the theatre in Rossmore with a wide variety of comedies, thrillers and drama classics.
THE 53rd West Cork Drama Festival opens in the theatre Rossmore on Friday March 7th and runs until St Patrick’s night Monday March 17th. Of the 11 plays on show only two have been part of the festival there before so audiences will have plenty of choice in plays they may not have seen at all before.
A family bingo event will be held in St Mary’s Hall, Rossmore on Sunday, January 26th at 3pm by the Kilmeen National School Parent’s Association. All are welcome.
Big Plans for Bealad The AGM of Kilmeen & Castleventry Community Development Association, which has been dormant for some years, was held in Rossmore recently. It was decided to re-launch and expand the role of this Association, whose purpose is to serve, where possible, certain needs of the community which are outside the scope of the existing parish organisations.
THE lighting was dimmed in the small wee hours after the very entertaining one act festival finished in Rossmore recently. The high standard of the performances meant that the audience was kept guessing as to which groups might take away the trophies adjudicated by Paul Brennan.

FOUR teams took part in a blitz in Barryroe last Saturday morning. Two U8 & two U10 teams played Barryroe in a most entertaining and exciting morning of football.
Munster U12 Football blitz in Pairc Ui Rinn On the day the U12 team played Tramore, Crecora, Killara Og and Castlehaven. This was a wonderful opportunity to play clubs from different counties. On the day this team performed exceptionally well and won three of their four matches.
CHILDREN from Kilmeen National School, Rossmore have gotten a taste for a local speciality, Bushby Strawberries! The local company donated thousands of strawberries to the school to help with their recent Healthy Eating Week held during the last week at school.
THE people of Clonakilty, Rossmore and surrounding areas turned out in force on Sunday to welcome home the members of the Kilmeen Drama Group who scored an historic third victory in a row at the All Ireland Open Drama Finals held in Athlone over the weekend.
Kilmeen U12 Footballers travel to Croke Park Recently, the Kilmeen U12 footballers travelled to Croke Park to take part in a Munster Football Blitz. On the day these young stars played Cromane (Kerry), Foilmore (Kerry) and Cooraclare (Clare). They performed exceptionally well and won two of their three matches comprehensively. THE curtains were pulled on Saturday night on the very successful 61st All Ireland Confined Drama Finals in the theatre Rossmore after the insightful adjudicator Padraic McIntyre presented the results and awards to a jovial and packed theatre. The colourful closing ceremony followed the final production by Galway’s Glenamaddy Players of ‘Moment’ by Irish playwright Deirdre Kinahan.
THE West Cork Drama Festival committee, based in the theatre, Rossmore, are delighted to have the honour of hosting the 61st All Ireland Confined Drama finals from April 19-27th this year (the open finals are always in Athlone). While the recipe for the renowned Clonakilty Blackpudding, primary sponsor of the festival, remains secret, the drama festival ‘ingredients’ are now known.

ROSSMORE Theatre has undergone major refurbishment works over the last two years that essentially has given a new lease to the building to create a state-of-the -art theatre for West Cork audiences.

Design a logo Kilmeen Defibrillator Group pictured recently at their design a logo event at Kilmeen National School. The pupils were invited by the Group to design their logo and the winning design was created by Hannah Ryan in sixth class.
