WEST Cork councillor Paul Hayes at the count centre in Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig, gives the thumbs up after the announcement that Cork South West and the nation has said Yes to the marriage equality referendum. Speaking afterwards Cllr Hayes said that he was delighted that the voters of Ireland had embraced the concept of marriage equality for all.
WEST Cork along with every constituency in the country except one, has backed the same sex marriage referendum by a considerable margin. The final vote in the Cork South West constituency was 56% Yes, 44% No the turnout was 61.7%. In actual numbers there were 37,107 votes cast in the constituency with 20,627 voting Yes, 16,225 voting No and 255 spoiled papers giving the Yes side a winning margin
WEST Cork Labour TD Michael McCarthy has joined campaigners seeking a “no” vote in the upcoming referendum on the abolition of the Seanad. The Dunmanway-based TD is set to join a canvass in Cork city on Friday organised by no campaign group Democracy Matters along with Fine Gael senator Paul Bradford, former Green Party Chair Dan Boyle and others.
WITH just over a week to go to the EU Fiscal Treaty Vote, West Cork Sinn Féin are asking people to use their vote and to vote against “a future of more cuts and stealth taxes”.
