Fourth 2016 SWCYRA Championship This year’s fourth SWYCRA Championship was held on Sunday 17th July 2016 in Castletownshend. Kilmacsimon crews had a successful day, with a total of 19 crews entered representing the club and bringing home 3 Gold Medals; 5 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals.
Sunshine greeted rowers and supporters to Castletownshend on Sunday, July 17th last for the fourth round of the Celtic Ross South West Coastal Yawl Rowing Association championship. With the County Final just two weeks away, many crews were hoping to secure the much-sought after qualification spots in the warm conditions on the day.
U14 County Semi-final A very young Kilbree U14 team contested the county semi-final on Monday evening, in Ballinure. It has been a great season for these girls. They had been undefeated to this point, having beaten a very strong Buttevant side in the quarter final. The opposition on this occasion was a very strong Castlelyons side. U16 and Junior Hurlers progress! U16 Hurling The U16 hurlers commenced their U16 championship run by playing St Fachtnas in Leap on Wednesday evening. Conditions were damp and slippery but this did not seem to influence the players too much. Kilbree had most of the early chances, Thomas Tyner taking the first three points. The sun shone on Union Hall for the third round of the Celtic Ross South West Coastal Yawl Rowing Association championship on Sunday, July 3rd last. With it all to play for in a number of categories, the day made for an exciting spectacle of rowing, which was not without its own twists and turns.
Junior Hurling It was a week of mixed fortunes for Kilbree’s junior hurlers. They beat Kilbrittain last week in the first round of the championship. This week they continued to compete in the county junior A league. On Wednesday evening they travelled to Ballinora to play the local side. The final score was Ballinora 2-20 to Kilbree’s 0-16. Following the postponement of the second round of the Celtic Ross Hotel SWCYRA championship on June 19th, it was rescheduled to take place on Sunday, June 26th. As a result, GalleyFlash Rowing Club postponed its own 2 oar challenge event in order to facilitate the hosting of the aforementioned championship regatta.
Junior Hurlers get off to a flying start! Kilbree juniors hurlers started their championship campaign very brightly, against Kilbrittain, on Friday evening in Ahiohill. They took control of proceedings from the start, with the aid of a very strong breeze. Denis Dullea’s incredible puck outs ensured the Kilbrittain defence was under continuous pressure. Junior Hurlers take on Kilbrittain in Championship Kilbree’s junior hurlers will play Kilbrittain in the first round of the championship, on Friday evening, in Bandon. In preparation for this they played a league match against Diarmuid O’Mathunas, in Rossmore on Saturday evening. THE first round of the 2016 Celtic Ross South West Coastal Yawl Rowing Association championship was held in Glandore on Sunday, June 12th. Changeable weather and mixed conditions on the water made for some interesting races as the first points of the season were picked up.
First 2016 SWCYRA Championship This year’s first SWYCRA Championship was held on Sunday, 12th June, in Glandore. Glandore is a great host to the races, with a prime viewing spot over the course. Races kicked off at 12pm where spectators enjoyed good weather conditions despite the water being a bit on the choppy side.
IT was a busy weekend of rowing action for rowers of the Galley over the June Bank Holiday weekend. A warm, albeit overcast afternoon greeted rowers and spectators alike to Kilkern Lake Regatta on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend. With eight races on the agenda, large crowds gathered to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment in the beautiful Castlefreke surroundings.
Disappointment for U14 Hurlers! U14 hurling final The U14 C final was played in Ballinacarriga on Tuesday last, in glorious weather conditions. Kilbree had defeated Bantry to reach this stage while St Patrick’s had defeated Ahan Gaels. St Patrick’s made the brighter start with two points from play by Liam O’Donovan. However a goal by Kilbree’s Ryan Jennings put Kilbree in front.
Great start to Junior A Football! Kilmeen junior footballers were promoted to Junior A football last July, having recorded a comprehensive win over Grange. The first outing in the new grade was against Ilen Rovers, in Drimoleague on Sunday evening.
Kilbree U14’s qualify for West Cork Final On Thursday evening the U14 hurlers played Bantry, in the West Cork semi-final, in Dunmanway. Kilbree started very strongly with some great points by Jack Murphy. A goal from Cian Murphy in the first quarter set Kilbree up nicely. The Kilbree lads continued to dominate with most of the possession and scoring chances. The half-time score was Kilbree 2-6 to Bantry’s 0-2.
U10 hurlers host fun blitz! Kilbree’s U10 hurlers played a blitz on home soil on Saturday morning. They played St Oliver Plunketts, St James and St Patricks in glorious sunshine. They played tremendously well but most important of all, they had great fun. Skibbereen Rowing Club have put Skibbereen on the map nationally and internationally with the club’s fantastic achievements and now they need your help. Thomas Tyner named on Cork U15 squad! Thomas Tyner has recently been named on the Cork U15 hurling development squad. Thomas won an All-Ireland medal with this squad at U14 level in the 2015 season. Thomas captained his own club team to a championship and league double. We are delighted for Thomas and his family and wish him the best of luck for the season!
It was a busy weekend for the club, on the 6th of May our pre-silage party took place in Tots Pub Ballygurteen a great night was had with our band the west cork ramblers playing the music till the early hours of Saturday morning thanks to everyone who came and sponsored prizes.
Mixed Fortunes for Junior Hurlers! The junior hurlers played St Colums in Rossmore on Friday evening, in a league encounter. Kilbree were victorious, the final score was Kilbree 0-16 to St Colum’s 0-09. In a reversal of fortunes, the juniors travelled to Ballinascarthy on Sunday where they lost. The final score was Ballinascarthy 0-14 to Kilbree’s 0-11.
Junior hurlers record narrow victory over Newcestown! On Friday evening, the junior hurlers took on Newcestown in a league fixture in Rossmore. This was a very exciting, well matched affair. The Kilbree lads were lucky to record a one point victory.
U14 hurlers unlucky to lose out to Western Gaels Kilbree U14’s welcomed Western Gaels to Rossmore, on Wednesday last. The visitors had much of the play in the first half. However Kilbree did not give up.
Easter Camp 2016 is a huge success! Over seventy children took part in the club’s annual Easter Camp in Rossmore. They enjoyed three days of hurling and football fun, under the expert guidance of coaches James Desmond, Paudie Crowley and Shane O’Donovan. Juniors lose Munster Final to Sneen-Derrynane! Kilmeen were hoping to be the second Cork team in ten years to capture the Munster Junior B football crown. On Sunday last, in Knockaderry they played a very strong Kerry side. Kilmeen opened the scoring with a Darren Santry point. Munster Football Final The Munster junior football final against Sneem/Derrynane (Kerry) has been scheduled for Sunday 13th March. The fixture will take place in Knockaderry (Co Limerick) at 1.45pm. A BUSY month ahead for the club with supporting Carbery macra clubs at various events. On Sunday the 13th of March Bantry Macra will be having a charity fun run starting at the Westlodge Hotel sign in is from 12:30 with race starting at 1pm.
