CLONAKILTY came to a virtual standstill as hundreds gathered to pay their last respects to the former agriculture minister Joe Walsh who died following a short illness at the age of 71. Mr Walsh was TD for Cork South West from 1977–1981 and 1977–1981 and served as Minister for Agriculture from 1992 –1994 and 1997 – 2004 during which time he dealt with the 2001 foot and mouth crisis.

As the bell tolled at St Mary’s Church in Schull, the single coffin was carried past the many relatives, neighbours and friends of the deceased, who stood, still in shock, at the recent tragic events.
MOURNERS gathered this week to bid farewell to the owner of Bantry House, Egerton Shelswell-White. Mr Shelswell-White inherited Bantry House in 1978 and over the last three decades has redeveloped the well-known landmark into one of the country’s premier tourist attractions.
THE 24-year-old student from Bandon who died in a tragic kayaking accident in Norway last week was buried in Bandon today (Monday). Colm Johnson from Clancoolmore, Bandon was on holiday with friends in Norway when the accident occurred as he was kayaking on the Sjoa River last Monday afternoon.
