LOCAL man Jonas Rennings of Tralibane, Bantry, relocated to Cairns Australia in 2010 with his wife Melissa and two young children. In the week before Christmas 2011, Melissa went to the doctor, and shortly afterwards was diagnosed with breast cancer. She started chemotherapy immediately, followed by radiation.

Ireland’s leading traditional acapella group The Voice Squad will be making its debut at the Masters of Tradition festival in Bantry on Thursday 15 August. The Voice Squad is a mix of the two tenor voices of Gran McPhaid and Phil Callery as well as the underlying bass of Gerry Cullen which, as Kevin Myers describes, “merge miraculously into a single, enchanting confluence.”

THE Random Acts of Kindness Festival, which is fun, free and for all ages returns to Clonakilty on 19th-21st July, celebrating, encouraging and showcasing the kindness, positive spirit and welcoming nature of west Cork and it’s people. The festival, the first of its kind, organised by members of Clonakilty Macra na Feirme was set up to “cut the misery and spread the positivity”.

THE FISHING village of Union Hall is casting its nets wide for a summer gathering revival of the traditional village festival. Plans are underway to stage a summer highlight of old, the ‘Festival by the Sea’ event this summer after a lapse of 25 years.

AN estimated 15,000 people thronged Courtmacsherry and Timoleague over the weekend for the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships which took place in Broadstrand Bay. It turned out to be a very successful event for rowing clubs from across West Cork too with GalleyFlash taking the senior men’s title and Myross taking the best adult crew accolade.
UP to 10,000 people are expected to attend the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships being held in Courtmacsherry’s Broadstrand Bay this weekend. More than 2,000 rowers from across the country will take part including a strong West Cork contingent.

THE annual Ballabuidhe festival drew big crowds to Dunmanway once again this year where more than 300 horses competed for €40,000 in prize money, cups and trophies. The biggest crowds attended on the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday of the four-day festival that ran from August 6th – 8th.
