THE biggest wave ever recorded in Irish Waters was reported south of the Kinsale Energy Gas Platform as Storm Darwin tore across the region. While inland tdowned trees, structural damage and power cuts were the problem, at sea the biggest waves ever recorded were the problem.
THE first earthquake recorded in modern history in the West Cork area struck off of the West Cork coast in the morning of Wednesday, December 4th. The earthquake which measured 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale and according to the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) it was the first recorded in the area since records began.
THE Naval Service Vessel L.É. Aoife has detained a British registered fishing vessel approximately 90 nautical miles south west of Mizen Head. The detention was in relation to an alleged technical breach of fishing regulations.

THE RNLI Castletownbere Lifeboat came to the aid off of the West Cork coast where a small yacht had got into trouble. The vessel, the 27′ yacht Caroline had a crew of two men aboard when she got into difficulty at around 6am on Monday morning while travelling from Valentia Island in Co. Kerry to Cape Clear.

A FISHERMAN has died after sustaining serious injuries aboard a fishing trawler some 25 miles off the Old Head Of Kinsale in West Cork. The alarm was raised at around 6.30pm last Thursday night when the Dunmore East-based 40ft trawler Liberty requested assistance for a seriously injured crew member.
