Record wave recorded off West Cork coast

THE biggest wave ever recorded in Irish Waters was reported south of the Kinsale Energy Gas Platform as Storm Darwin tore across the region.   While inland tdowned trees, structural damage and power cuts were the problem, at sea the biggest waves ever recorded were the problem.

Earthquake strikes off West Cork coast

THE first earthquake recorded in modern history in the West Cork area struck off of the West Cork coast in the morning of Wednesday, December 4th.   The earthquake which measured 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale and according to the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) it was the first recorded in the area since records began.

RNLI aid yacht off West Cork coast

THE RNLI Castletownbere Lifeboat came to the aid off of the West Cork coast where a small yacht had got into trouble.   The vessel, the 27′ yacht Caroline had a crew of two men aboard when she got into difficulty at around 6am on Monday morning while travelling from Valentia Island in Co. Kerry to Cape Clear.

Fisherman dies off West Cork coast

A FISHERMAN has died after sustaining serious injuries aboard a fishing trawler some 25 miles off the Old Head Of Kinsale in West Cork.   The alarm was raised at around 6.30pm last Thursday night when the Dunmore East-based 40ft trawler Liberty requested assistance for a seriously injured crew member.

Titanic to be remembered along West Cork coast

ON April 11th 1912 The RMS Titanic set sail from Cobh destined for New York; four days later she sank after hitting an iceberg with the loss of 1,517 lives. This month, communities along the West Cork coast will commemorate the centenary of the Titanic’s ill-fated maiden voyage when she left Cork Harbour destined never to arrive in America.
