Closure of seven West Cork Garda stations saved just €28,000 says councillor

SINN Féin councillor Rachel McCarthy has issued a scathing criticism of the Fine Gael and Labour parties over the closure of seven garda stations in West Cork that resulted in savings of just €28,000 per year. Between 2012 and 2013 seven Garda stations across West Cork were closed saving of €4,000 per year on each closure. The information is contained in the answer provided by the Minister For Justice in

Thomas unearths a piece of West Cork history

A PIECE of West Cork’s bloody history made an unexpected appearance in Castletownsend recently thanks to an eagled-eyed nine-year-old who was helping his father plant some shrubs in Castletownsend. The discovery, an 18th Century lead musket-ball, was found by Abbeystrewry National School pupil Thomas Somerville who was helping dad Thomas  planting trees and shrubs in the area at the time.

West Cork carer is runner-up in national poetry competition

GAIA Charis from Castletownshend has been named runner up in the Family Carers’ second annual Caring for Carers Ireland poetry competition, the winners of which were announced at the Ennis Book Club Festival in County Clare during the weekend. The nationwide poetry competition asked Family Carers to compose poems on the theme of springtime, representing renewal and new life.

West Cork communities go that extra mile for Cancer Research

THIS year’s West Cork Castletownsend to Skibbereen 9km walk in aid of Cork Cancer Research Centre was a great success, as walkers went that extra mile in memory of the founder of the centre and local, world-renowned cancer research pioneer Professor Gerry O’Sullivan. The annual event took place on February 26th last, raising €13,000 in much-needed funds for research into poor prognosis and incurable cancers.

Oscar set to draw the crowds for Castletownshend fundraiser

A STAGE performance of Oscar Wilde’s much-loved gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray will form the centrepiece of a fundraising evening at Castletownshend’s Drishane House on Saturday, March 24th next. The evening’s entertainment in aid of the Heritage Fund for St Barrahane’s Church will also include a champagne reception and a full-course dinner service.
