THE Naval Service has intercepted a yacht 200 miles off the West Cork coast, believed to have on board the biggest drugs haul since Dances with Waves was detained in 2008. A massive international operation swung into operation to detain the 18 metre yacht Makayabella which is understood to have at least a metric tonne of cocaine aboard valued at €80m.
THE body of a 66-year-old man has been recovered from the water off the West Cork Coast after two other people were rescued alive as part of a major search and rescue operation. THE Baltimore RNLI lifeboats responded to an emergency in the Ballydehob area on Wednesday evening. The alarm was raised at 17.45 and both the all-weather and inshore lifeboats responded immediately. A kayaker had reported persons in the water between Horse Island and Audley Cove.
THE single occupant of a small motor yacht had to be rescued by emergency services on Saturday afternoon when the vessel caught fire and sank about two miles off of Seven Heads.
THE Naval Service has detained a British registered fishing vessel some 30 miles off of Mizen Head for an alleged breach of fishing regulations. The boat has been escorted to Casteltownbere by the LE Roisín where she was handed over to gardaí.
THREE crewmembers have been rescued from a fishing vessel that got into trouble today (Sunday) off of Union Hall. The Jeanette Roberto, a 42 ft fibreglass hull fishing boat out of Union Hall was returning to harbour in a heavy swell when she lost power. The boat was forced onto rocks and the three crewmen abandoned ship in a life raft.
