AFTER the opening 25 minutes of last Sundays Round 4 of the JAFC against Kilbrittain in Clonakilty it was hard to envisage a Bandon victory.
We trailed by 1-5 to 0-2 and those two scores from Philip Crowley and Darren Crowley had come 22 minutes apart.
Kilbrittain quite simply ran rings around us and with a little more composure and directness should have been well over the victory line.
Ross Cashman was outstanding and was it not for an equally outstanding stop by Pat Prendergast on 22 minutes then we would have had a near impossible task in front of us.
However, the switch of James O’Donovan onto Ross Cashman soon thwarted the latter’s influence and it was a long diagonal run by the former that led to Fionn O’Leary’s goal that got us right back in the hunt before the break.
Upon the re-start, the introduction of Conor Sugrue and Jason McCarthy further bolstered our chances and thereafter we dominated proceedings without ever pulling away on the score-board.
Mark Sugrue and Fionn O’Leary added a goal a piece and Robbie Moloney was active after his introduction.
With five minutes remaining we led by six points but some late slackness meant we gave away 1-2 and just ran out winners on a score of 2-9 to 3-7.
This was not a convincing performance, what with a very slow start and we really have to start well in the quarter-final against the tournaments favourites St Mary’s next Saturday evening in Newcestown with a 07:30pm throw-in.
