Union Hall report 2012
On a very wet day in Union Hall Kilmacabea Rowing Club managed to build on their success from the first round of the SWCYRA championship with another impressive haul of medals in the second round last Sunday. One silver and five bronze was the clubs total with no Kilmac team finishing outside the top five in their respective races.
Silver went once again to the U14 boys team, Timmy O’Donovan, Ashley Deane, Caelan O’Mahony and Eolan Dineen who were as impressive this week as they were in Baltimore to maintain second place in the championship.
At underage level bronze medals were won by the U12s, U16 ladies and U18s. The U12s rowed superbly once again and are really beginning to gel as a crew, Mikey O’Mahony, Dara Tobin, Peter Collins and Adrian Gore the youngsters in that boat. The U16 ladies, Abby Hourihan, Georgina Deane, Kellie Kregan and Vicki O’Brien took to the water with high expectations and came very close to victory, settling for third place in the end in this very competitive race. The U18s were another crew with big notions after claiming gold in impressive fashion in Baltimore but as always the competition is fierce in the U18 race and the Kilmac boys had to settle for bronze on this occasion. Kieran O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Pat Calnan and Alex Nowotynski making up that team.
Bronze in the overage categories went to the Veteran Men, Axel……, Ger O’Sullivan, John O’Donovan and J.J O’Brien and to the young junior mens team, Andrew O’Sullivan, Liam Cronin, Eoin Flavin and Joseph O’Callaghan.
There were also very strong performances from the U14 ladies, Veteran ladies, Senior men and Intermediate men who were unlucky in the end to all finish in fourth place. The U14 ladies, Rachel O’Callaghan, Colette O’Regan, Niamh Burns and Shannon Ronan now have the bit between their teeth and are aiming for the medal positions next time out. The Senior men, Kieran O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Pat Calnan, Alex Nowotynski and the Intermediate men, Donal Williamson, Declan ‘Speedy’ Whooley, Donal O’Donovan and Sean O’Donovan both rowed strongly in their tough multi-turn races and the Veteran ladies, Mary O’Mahony, Lucy O’Brien, Jennifer Calnan and Marion McCarthy also pulled a powerful a fourth place finish.
The U16s and Pre-vet men were the clubs two fifth place finishers and came very close to achieving more but were both in incredibly tight races causing both to even more determined for the next day out in Castletownshend. The U16s were Euan Tobin, Shane Collins, Caelan O’Mahony and Cathail (Ring RC) with Donal Williamson, Axel…., Declan Whooley and Finbar McNulty (Ross RC) making up the pre-vet men team.
Thanks are due to the clubs coxes, Joseph O’Callaghan, Mary O’Sullivan and Lisa Cronin who braved the rain all day to give their Kilmacabea comrades the best possible support. Also congratulations to Lisa Cronin who sat in the coxes’ seat for the first time in a championship regatta, taking both the senior and Intermediate mens teams in the tricky multi-turn races.
