At a cheque presentation by the Kinsale Lions Club last December, JJ Hurley, who contributes to a number regional publications, was shocked to learn that the local Chapter of St Vincent de Paul had spent €100,000 in the area over the past 12 months.
Having decided that instead of highlighting the issue in an article in December, JJ decided to use his entry in the Cork City Marathon to raise funds for the charity.
Certainly, he was overwhelmed by the generosity of the residents and business community in Kinsale, Belgooly, Riverstick, Tracton and Ballinhassig, who despite the economic climate dug deep into their pockets and contributed €1800.
In addition a sponsorship day organised in Smith’s Supervalu, Kinsale also proved very lucrative and he was particularly thankfully to all those ladies who manned the station on the day, including Mary Broderick, Rosie Eaton, Mary O’ Donovan, Patsy Feeney Catherine Kelleher,Marianne Boyd and Marie O’Sullivan .
For the record, JJ finished his first marathon in a time of 3:57:58
