WEST Cork has retained all of its Blue Flag beaches in the latest survey from An Taisce, the results of which were announced by Environment Minister Phil Hogan in Dublin.
Garrylucas, Garretstown, Inchydoney, The Warren, Owenahincha, Tragumna and Barleycove all met the stringent Blue Flag Criteria along with 77 other beaches and three marinas around the country.
East Cork fared less well however with Youghal’s Claycastle and Front Strand beaches failing to meet water quality standards.
West Cork also did well in the Green Coast category which is awarded to beaches which meet EC bathing water quality standards, but which are also prized for their “natural, unspoilt environment”.
Dooneen Pier, Ballyrisode, Galley Cove and Garnish were all awarded the Green Coast status along with 52 other locations nationally.
Patricia Oliver from An Taisce said, “The continuing high standards of our beaches are testament to the hard work carried out by local authorities throughout the year to improve water quality and provide clean, safe beaches for everyone to enjoy”.
