STUDENTS from a number of local primary schools took part in a series of food workshops recently with one of Clonakilty’s top chefs to learn all about the importance of good food and nutrition.
The schools, Gael Scoil Clonakilty, St Joseph’s School, Scoil na mBuachailli and Reenascreena National School were inivoted in to Richy’s Restautaurant in Clonakilty for the workshops which were part of the Euro-toques Mini-chefs nationwide initiative.
The idea behind the workshops, which Euro-toques Ireland – the Irish branch of the European Community of Chefs – has been running for several years, is to encourage healthier eating habits by inspiring an interest and pleasure in eating and cooking.
The workshops cover everything from growing food and seasonality to healthy lunchbox ideas and simple recipes.
But the fundamental part of all the workshops is taste – teaching children how to taste and encouraging them to use all their senses when they eat and to be open to trying a variety of different foods.
