FORTY-eight students from third and fourth class in Gaelscoil Chloch na gCoillte travelled to Mullingar this week to compete in the “Féile Drámaíochta na h-Éireann” (All Ireland Drama Festival) for primary schools.

The week-long festival sees pupils from primary schools from all over the country compete in the event.

The Clonakilty Gaelscoil students will enter the Choral Verse section of the festival with “Anseo i Lár an Ghleanna”, having progressed through the County Cork and Munster stages of the competition with the piece since Christmas.

The 10-minute presentation tells the story of the priest saying mass on the mass rock during the Penal Laws when the redcoats appear.

Múinteóirí Elaine Ní Longaigh agus Cormac Ó hAlmháin have spent many weeks coaching and perfecting the drama with their students.

Dúirt said, “We are very proud of the hard work put in by all the 48 pupils of An Gaelscoil.

“Since early December, they have worked tirelessly at rehearsals and each time they perform ‘Anseo i Lár an Ghleanna’, their standard improves”.

As well as the vocal aspect of the drama piece, the bodhrán and other percussion instruments are used to create sound effects.
