THE increase in the number of people seeking help from MABS,the money advice and budgeting service is at record levels with an increase of 7,593 in the first quarter of this year according to newly released figures.

This is a major concern that the government must prioritize according to Bandon Sinn Féin Cllr Rachel McCarthy.

“The increase in numbers seeking help with MABS is a sign that the austerity that this government is implementing is pushing more and more people over the edge when it comes to keeping up with their bills.

“Working as a student social worker I have seen the desperation some people are enduring at first hand and the pressure on home life this pressure causes,” she said.

Cllr McCarthy said that more austerity will not solve the crisis and urged the Government to take a new direction and “invest in a meaningful stimulus to create jobs”.
