WEST Cork has cemented its reputation as Ireland’s top culinary destination in the latest editions of the Bridgestone Guides.

The poplar guides which have become a real foodie’s bible list the top restaurants and places to stay in Ireland and this year a new mobile app has also been introduced.

The number of West Cork establishments and chefs to get the thumbs up is simply staggering once again underlining the region’s unmatched quality and expertise when it comes to food and hospitality.

Of the 12 new entrants in the Bridgestone 100 Best Places to Stay in Ireland guide two are from West Cork, Liss Ard Estate near Skibbereen and the West Cork Hotel in Skibbereen.

The only Cork new entry in the Bridgestone 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland guide is also a West Cork establishment, Glebe Gardens in Baltimore.

Of the 100 best restaurants in the country no, less than seven are in West Cork: Deasy’s Harbour Bar, Clonakilty; Fishy Fishy Café, Kinsale; Glebe Gardens, Baltimore; Good Things Café, Durrus; O’Callaghan-Walshe, Rosscarbery; The Poacher’s Inn, Bandon and Toddie’s @ The Bulman, Kinsale.

Three of those, Deasy’s Harbour Bar, Fishy Fishy Café and Good Things Café also make the exclusive list of 23 “hot restaurants” for 2012 while Rosscarbery’s O’Callaghan-Walshe is rated as a “classic restaurant”.

An incredible four of Ireland’s 10 “Great Women Chefs” are from West Cork: Martina Delaney (O’Callaghan-Walshe), Jean Perry (Glebe Gardens), Caitlin Ruth (Deasy’s Harbour Bar) and Carmel Somers (Good Things Café).

West Cork wasn’t found wanting in the 100 Best Places to Stay guide either with 11 locations making the grade: Blindgate House, Kinsale; Fortview House, Goleen; The Glen, Kilbrittain; Gougane Barra Hotel, Macroom; Grove House, Schull; Kilcolman Rectory, Enniskeane; Liss Ard Estate, Skibbereen; Pier House, Kinsale; Rolf’s Country House, Baltimore; Seaview House Hotel, Bantry and the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen.

Neil Grant at the West Cork Hotel and Neil Lucey at the Gougane Barra Hotel also made the list of “10 Great Hotel Managers”.

The Bridgestone 100 Best Guides are published by Estragon Press and have won the international Andre Simon and Glenfiddich awards, and the first Slow Food Ireland Media Prize.
