HUNDREDS of people attended a meeting in Macroom’s Castle Hotel to organise a campaign to retain Macroom Community Hospital.
Fears are growing that the hospital may be targeted for closure due to ongoing cuts to health service budgets with signals from government indicating that community hospitals with less than 50 beds, like Macroom, may be targeted.
More than 400 people attended the meeting where it was decided to set up an action committee to defend the interests of the hospital.
Local Sinn Féin representative Des O’Grady warned that the hospital might be targeted with by a slow reduction of resources leading to it becoming unviable.
He also warned that, “nothing happens until it happens, and when it does, it’s usually the worst news”.
