WEST Cork Paralympian John Twomey will be bidding for his third Paralympics medal at the upcoming games in London.
The Kinsale native will be competing in the Sonar Sailing Class at the London Games where he will be joined by two other members of the Kinsale Yacht Club, Ian Costello and Anthony Hearty.
The men have spent the last 12-months preparing for the competition under the watchful eye of world-renowned sailing coach, Simon Wheeler.
John is no stranger to success at the games having already secured a bronze medal in the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and a gold medal at the Seoul Games in 1988 in the discus.
The team have already secured a top five finish in the World Championship this year, and are confident of launching a significant challenge to the three frontrunners in the competition, GB, Holland and Norway.
Despite being confined to a wheelchair as a result of a cycling accident in 1970, John has pursued a successful career in accountancy and sport and has been the main driving force behind the success of Kinsale’s twinnings with Newport, Rhode Island and Antibes, France.
Local town councillor Michael Frawley said, “John is a tremendous role model to all those who need to overcome adversity in their lives.
“On behalf of the people in the town, I wish him all the best”.
