AN intimate concert performance from award-winning Irish actress and singer Maria Doyle Kennedy is just one of the many, many highlights of the Culture Night celebrations in West Cork which will take place on Friday, September 21st next.
For one special night, everyone can enjoy the unique experience of Culture Night, a night of FREE entertainment, discovery and adventure.
Culture Night has dozens of free events across West Cork and County Cork with highlights including a special Craft Market in Cork County Hall featuring a selection of fine Irish crafts from around the country: glass, ceramics, jewellery, batik and more.
There will be musical accompaniment from the harp and flute duo, Nancy and Miriam Long.
The Sarah Walker Gallery in Castletownbere will host an intimate concert with singer, and international actor, Maria Doyle Kennedy.
Well known from her roles in television series such as “The Tudors” and “Downton Abbey” and films such as “The Commitments” – Maria is a singer first and foremost.
There will be a unique dance performance from Croí Glan, contemporary dance company in Cork County Library Headquarters.
Croi Glan Integrated Dance Company is a professional contemporary dance company based in Cork, which performs work that includes both disabled and non-disabled dancers.
Culture Night will give visitors an opportunity to view rarely seen items from the Cork County Library Collections including maps, rare books, newspapers and archival material.
There will also be a focus on local and national material recording street games of the past, both nationally and in Cork, including the Schools Manuscript Collection.
Recreating times past, the Ó Neill Monument in Bantry will be the place to be for an evening of open air platform dancing.
Cork Film Centre in The Gunpowder Mills Centre, Ballincollig will screen a selection of short films made over the past 10 years through the Cork Film Centre/RTÉ Short Script Awards.
The Gunpowder Mills Gallery will host an exhibition of video and print by artist Pat McArdle.
Cork Airport will host an exhibition of photographs from Carrigaline Photographic Society in the arrivals concourse of Cork Airport entitled “Insights”.
Levis’ Bar in Ballydehob will host an evening of sea songs and international folk.
So, bring the children, catch up with friends, meet new people, participate, interact and experience the exhilaration of free entry, live performances, workshops, tours, talks, drama, dance and a whole range of other creative activities for free!
Culture Night brings together a unique and diverse audience who all share a desire to explore and enjoy culture.
Culture Night is an initiative coordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with Cork County Council.
