DUNMANWAY-based Labour TD Michael McCarthy has been elected to the Constitutional Convention as one of seven Labour Party representatives on the forum.
Speaking following confirmation of his election, Deputy McCarthy said he was honoured to have been elected by his colleagues in the Labour Parliamentary Party to the Constitutional Convention.
“This will be a wonderful opportunity to have an input into the important process to better equip our Constitution to meet the challenges of the 21st Century,” he said.
Deputy McCarthy added, “The Constitution is the bedrock of our democracy however many aspects of it are no longer fit for purpose.
“One of the aspects which I intend to focus on throughout this process will be that of electoral reform as I firmly believe that the time for change in this particular area is long overdue.
“I also look forward to addressing other issues up for consideration including the role of women in politics and giving emigrants a vote in presidential elections.”
He concluded by saying, “I want to assure the people of Cork South West that I will relay their views on constitutional change to the best of my ability at this forum. I look forward to the process getting underway”.
