PROPOSALS to develop a new Aldi discount supermarket in Skibbereen moved a step closer at the last meeting of Skibbereen Town Council as councillors agreed on a vote of 8-1 to allow a right of way to the proposed site at the side of the Fairfield car park.

Mayor Cllr Karen Coakley was the only councillor who opposed the move which is expected to see developer Shead Properties lodge a planning application for a new supermarket which is believed to be earmarked for a new Aldi.

Aldi opened their first branch in West Cork last year in Dunmanway which has proved a big hit with shoppers but plans to develop another Aldi at Clonakilty’s Waterfront development proved unsuccessful.
