Lunchtime Film Screenings at West Cork Arts Centre

As part of the Bealtaine Festival, West Cork Arts Centre will screen The Last Statue Maker in Cork. This short film tells of one man’s life and work. Maurice O’Donnell’s lifelong fascination with statues, grew from modelling figures from turf as a small child, to an apprenticeship at Bernardi’s Statue Shop in Cork, to time spent in Italy studying with the great masters. His work has been exhibited all over the world and he continued to make statues right up to his eighties. The documentary also tells the stories of some of the statues themselves, including the famous ‘moving’ statue of Ballinspittle, which was one of Maurice’s creations. [Read more...]

Artists and students are invited to take part in a life drawing session at West Cork Arts Centre as part of National Drawing Day on Saturday 18 May. Drawing Day was started in 2004 by the National Gallery of Ireland’s Education Department and has developed into a nationwide event, held in partnership with national and local museums, galleries and cultural centres.

Tara Brandel’s new solo work Gawky & Awkward is a very personal piece, revealing the things we struggle with and a dancer’s creative journey through dyslexia. The work is directed by Caroline Bowditch (previously Scottish Dance Theatre’s Dance Agent for Change) and incorporates an original score by disabled composer Charlotte White.

Octagon Exhibition at West Cork Arts Centre

octagonOPENING at West Cork Arts Centre on Saturday May 4th is Octagon, an exhibition of painting, print, drawing, mixed-media, video and sound works by West Cork-based artists - Alison Cronin, Marie Cullen, Sharon Dipity, Paul Forde-Cialis, Ian Humphreys, Tess Leak, Susan Montgomery and Sarah Ruttle, which showcases the diverse studio practices of 8 artists who facilitate creative learning programmes at the Centre. The exhibition opens to the public at 3.00pm this Saturday and runs until Saturday June 8th.

Tales of Light and Shadow at the West Cork Arts Centre

wcacTALES of Light and Shadow is WCAC’s latest exhibition and showcases artwork from the nine groups of West Cork primary school children aged 4 to 13 years who participated in the primary schools’ classroom-based programme 2012 -13.

 

The children developed class projects, under the guidance of their class teachers and facilitating artists Alison Cronin and Tess Leak, inspired by a visit to the exhibition The Essence of Taste by James L. Hayes at West Cork Arts Centre in Autumn 2012.

WCAC presents talk on The Atlas of The Great Irish Famine

atlas-famineTHE West Cork Arts Centre, in association with the Geography Department, University College Cork and Cork University Press has great pleasure in presenting a Public Talk based on the Atlas of The Great Irish Famine on Friday, March 8th at 8pm by Mike Murphy, Cartographer, Geography Dept., UCC and one of three Editors of the Atlas of the Great Irish Famine along with Fr. Pat Hickey, Atlas Contributor, Historian and Local Famine Expert

 

The atlas has in excess of seven hundred pages and includes expert analyses from over fifty contributors.
