Vintage cars take to the road

vintage-carsTHE West Cork Vintage Club annual run takes place this Sunday (May 19th) starting at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery and heading to Baltimore via the scenic route through Glandore and Union Hall.

 

Up to 100 cars are exepected to take part including the classic Ford Cortina once owned by former Taoiseach Jack Lynch.

Tit Bonohmme families launch legal action

THE families of the three Egyptian fisherman who drowned when the trawler Tit Bonhomme sank in January 2012 have launched a legal action against the owners of the vessel.

 

The civil case is being taken on behalf of the men who were illegal immigrants when they were working on the boat when it sank at the mouth of Glandore Harbour.

Safety changes to be put in place following Tit Bonhomme report

A REPORT from the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) report into the sinking of the Tit Bonhomme in January 2012 has found that fatigue was a major factor in the sinking of the vessel.

 

The reports findings show that the vessel was on auto-pilot when she struck rocks at the mouth of Glandore Harbour resulting in the loss of five crew members, one of the six crew survived the tragedy.

A COMMITTEE has been formed in Union Hall to petition the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) for a new inshore lifeboat.

 

Over 200 people attended a public meeting in Union Hall this week where a decision was made to once again submit proposals to the RNLI board meeting scheduled to take place in Poole, Dorset in April.

National Tree Week in Union Hall

treeweek-union hall 003TO mark National Tree Week 2013, Union Hall National School planted six native Irish trees kindly donated by SWS Forestry Department.

 

The school children each received an oak tree to take home.

 

Pictured planting one of the trees are pupils from the school with their Principal, Mr Brendan McCarthy and Michael Connelly and Martin Brew both of SWS Forestry.

Union Hall casts nets wide for summer gathering

Plans are underway to stage a summer highlight of old, the ‘Festival by the Sea’ event this summer after a lapse of 25 years.

Bill Deasy and Fr Pierce Cormac overall winners, honorary Cork people of the year David and Patsy Puttnam

 

ON the week, that marked the first anniversary, of the Tit Bonhomme trawler tragedy, Bill Deasy and Fr Pierce Cormac were the winners received the Cork Persons of the Year Award.

 

The award judges said Bill Deasy and Fr Cormac personified the community effort, when they helped co-ordinate the 25 day search for the five fishermen who died, when their trawler sank at the mouth of Glandore Harbour on January 15th, 2012.

A SEA tragedy that sparked a 26 day search for five lost fishermen has been remembered in a moving church service in West Cork.

Exactly a year after the Tit Bonhomme fishing trawler hit rocks and foundered in Glandore Harbour, the families of those lost gathered in grief at St Bridget’s Church in Union Hall.

A SPECIAL mass will be held at St Bridget’s Church in Union Hall next Tuesday evening to mark the first anniversary of the Tit Bonhomme tragedy in which five fishermen lost their lives.

Union Hall Pink Umbrella Walk a huge success

PEOPLE turned out in their hundreds on Sunday 7th October for the “Pink Umbrella” Walk in Union Hall, in aid of Action Breast Cancer.
