BANDON’S Dr Clare O’Leary and Mike O’Shea have made it back to solid land after a hair-raising return journey to civilisation after a decision was made to abandon their attempt to walk to the North Pole.
The duo endured some of the most severe weather the region has seen in more than 30 years.
On average the area would be hit with just one or two storms per season. O’Leary and O’Shea battled four storms in the space of a week. These storms caused ice to drift which in turn meant that the pair were losing up to two miles per day.
