WHILE looking at the racing at Chester last week, it struck me that this looked to be a very extraordinary racecourse, with the horses seemingly always on the turn throughout most races, and the draw being particularly advantageous in the sprint races to the horses drawn on the inside of the track.

Crops and Colours….two words that summarize 2013 summer trends. Yup, crop tops are easier said than done so switch the shpuds for a salad if you attempt to wear one! Neon colours are hitting shops everywhere, they’re unavoidable. So if you can’t beat them…. Pennys are doing a neon blazer that’s a twin to last year’s Zara 2012 collection!!
TO paraphrase an old Gilbert and Sullivan ditty, “a soccer manager’s lot is not a happy one”, an adage that would apply this week in many quarters in both England and Ireland.
THE world of horseracing is absolutely chock-full of traditions, most of which go back a very long way, and are deeply attached to the realms of chance, good and bad fortune, and all that goes with these imposters in life.
How many times have you seen a “coincidence” bet come up, to do with specific names and numbers, and even sometimes to things as basic as birthdays etc.

WITH just a couple of matches left for each team, the relegation battle in the Premiership is gradually turning into a red-hot contest, for, with Reading and QPR already condemned to the Championship, the identity of the third team to accompany them down is still right in the melting pot.
Aston Villa, just a few weeks ago, looked prime candidates for the drop, but, with some sterling displays since, have eased slightly away from the danger zone, and do look to have the capabilities for survival, as they are now on the elusive 40 points mark. Villa’s last two games are toughies, Chelsea at home, and their fellow strugglers Wigan away, and they would do well to get three points from these two games.
“I made a catastrophic error!”. This was the frantic response of the renowned trainer at the British end of the Godolphin Empire, which has its stable in the heartland of English racing, at Newmarket, an area which is commonly known in racing circles as “Headquarters”.
The Godolphin people have been racing from here for years, and it is mainly from here that the irrepressible Frankie Dettori used to operate when riding in England.

Well, here we are, in the closing weeks of the Premiership season, and one could not say that the fight for the title was, from mid-season on anyway, the guts and garters effort that you would expect to get from teams when there is obviously so much at stake.

ON the weekend of the 4th/5th of May, we will have the first two classic races of the season at Newmarket, the 2,000 Guineas, for colts, and the Fillies race, the 1,000 Guineas, both races to be run over the famous Rowley Mile testing straight course.
These races have been won by many outstanding exponents of the turf, and it is the strong hope that this year the races will produce again a horse that can go on to win an Oaks or a Derby later on in the racing year.
