O’Donovan criticises Minister’s lack of urgency over fodder crisis

denis-odonovanFIANNA Fáil Senator Denis O’Donovan has heavily criticised the Minister for Agriculture for his lack of action on the fodder crisis which he says is deepening by the day.

 

Senator O’Donovan raised the issue in the Seanad this morning (Wednesday) and outlined his deep concern at the lack of urgency on behalf of the Minister in dealing with the crisis.

MINISTER for Agriculture Simon Coveney has announced that he has extended the duration of the Imported Fodder Transport Scheme for one week. The scheme will now run until Friday 10th May.

 

The Minister also today confirmed that maize silage is eligible under the scheme. He said his Department has been working with the industry on this and said that large quantities of maize silage up to 6,000 tons are currently being sourced for early delivery to this country. Minister Coveney commended the Dairy co-ops for their work over the past two weeks.

The decision made by the Council of Ministers in Brussels is a very important decision for the future of European fisheries and is a clear expression of the will of the Council to consign to history the current discard practices in European fisheries.

MINISTER Simon Coveney has welcomed the international fisheries agreement signed between the EU and Norway in Clonakilty.

 

The negotiations commenced in Clonakilty and were hosted by Ireland, who in its role of Presidency of the EU, co-ordinated the EU position in these international negotiations.

Coveney reveals details of plan to end discarding of over quota fishing

MARINE Minister Simon Coveney hopes to end the practice of discarding over quota fish catches by 2018, with all excess fish caught to be landed.

 

Reacting to the actions of a Wexford trawler that landed stocks of out of quota monkfish on the pier at Kilmore Quay on Thursday, Mr Coveney warned that chaos would result if EU policies were ignored.  [Read more...]

Announcement of €20m Agri-Environment Options Scheme

THE Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney has announced that he is re-opening the Agri-Environmental Options Scheme (AEOS) to new entrants.

 

Welcoming the move, West Cork Fine Gael TD Noel Harrington said, “This will encourage farmers to adhere to the guidelines set down that will deliver high standards, which will have a positive impact on our Environment.
