Vintage cars take to the road

vintage-carsTHE West Cork Vintage Club annual run takes place this Sunday (May 19th) starting at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery and heading to Baltimore via the scenic route through Glandore and Union Hall.

 

Up to 100 cars are exepected to take part including the classic Ford Cortina once owned by former Taoiseach Jack Lynch.

THIS year’s Transition Year Business Projects Awards were announced at a prize-giving ceremony in the Aula Maxima, University College Cork with a team from Maria Immaculata Community College, Dunmanway taking third place overall.

 

The team from Mount St. Michael in Rosscarbery were also awarded special recognition for their efforts.

 

The Transition Year Business Project Awards is an initiative of the UCC Faculty of Commerce and Cork Chamber and are kindly sponsored by BNY Mellon, a global investments company and major employer in Cork.

TOURISM operators from around Ireland including Sarah Dallas of Actons Hotel in Kinsale and Helen Wycherley-Taller of the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery travelled to Britain recently to join Tourism Ireland at the ‘Best of Britain and Ireland’ (BoBI) travel trade exhibition, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham.

Ross team have the dice-factor

mount-st-michaelA TEAM of students from Mount St Michael Secondary School, Rosscarbery are through to the national final of the Transition Year Get Up & Go mini-company competition with their fun mathematical card game, Dicefactors.

 

The girls, Fiona O’Callaghan Desmond, Roxanne Kearney and Aoibhin Hodnett set up a mini-company to produce the game which is designed to improve basic numerical skills.

THE South West Coast Yawl Rowing Association (SWCYRA) comprises ten rowing clubs in West Cork.

 

The Celtic Ross Hotel became title sponsors of the Association in 2012 and at a reception in Rosscarbery recently it was announced this partnership will continue for 2013 and for the first time it will include a perpetual Club of the Year trophy.

Suspended sentence for driver in horrific Innishannon road crash

A WEST Cork motorist who pleaded guilty to careless driving which resulted in the death of a 67-year-old woman has been given a three-month suspended sentence and a two-year driving ban by Judge Sean O’Donnobháin in Cork.

 

Sinead Timoney from Millcove, Rosscarbery was originally charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mary O’Leary on the main N71 south of Innishannon in September 2011 but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of careless driving.

 

The court in Cork heard that the husband of the deceased, Donal O’Leary from Dunmanway, did not want to see another life ruined and did not want to see the 30-year-old go to jail. [Read more...]

Over 60s talent competition comes to West Cork

FOUNDED by Paddy O’Brien in 1977 the Over 60s Talent Competition has been a huge succes over the years in Cork city and now for the first time the competition is coming to West Cork.

 

The Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery is organising and hosting the West Cork heat which was launched in front of a large crowd by Paddy O’Brien at the Hotel’s monthly Afternoon Tea Dance.

THE pupils of Scoil Náisúnta Rae na Scríne are currently working on a project about the mill at Reenascreena near Rosscarbery.

 

The project covers the period from 1850-1955 and the pupils are seeking the public’s help to discover the full story of the old mill.
